MTV Unplugged

On their long-overdue MTV Unplugged, Kinky revisit the hits that cemented their status as one of Mexico’s most beloved bands, known for playfully merging electronica and alt-rock. In addition to four new tracks, including the nostalgic-for-new-wave “Ilegal,” the live set offers up some imaginative covers, such as the Voz de Mando and Beto Zapata–assisted “Para Poder Llegar a Tí,” where laser blips interpolate the traditional accordion lines of Ramón Ayala’s norteña classic. Carla Morrison (“A Donde Van Los Muertos”) and Mala Rodríguez (“Negro Día”) add a dose of estrogen to the regiomontano boys’ club. The jam session ends on a happy note with “Bien Pedo, Bien Loco,” as dreamy percussion and giant horns, courtesy of Banda Los Recoditos, collide for one big party.
