Established as a joint venture between (EMI) subsidiary The Gramophone Co. Ltd. and Paul Hamlyn Publishing Group in the UK, later establishing branches in South Africa, Australia, France, Germany, Belgium, and Sweden, selling low cost re-issues from the parent company's vast catalogue, plus some original material. The company was wholly acquired by on 1st Jan 1971, and remained an immediate subsidiary of renamed company until 2013. As of 2025, the company remains as a dormant company and is a direct subsidiary of Parlophone Records Ltd.
