About
An eclectic pop-oriented label that was founded in 1996 as a part of the budding DreamWorks SKG empire. Initially distributed by Geffen/MCA, the label founded by the "G" of SKG, David Geffen, it switched to Interscope/Universal during the merger of the MCA and PolyGram families of labels that formed the Universal Music Group. The label was run by industry legends Lenny Waronker and Mo Ostin, who brought their artist-friendly philosophy to the label after they were forced out of Warner Bros. Records during WEA's great management shift of the 1990s. DreamWorks SKG never lived up to its potential: the label was sold to Universal in 2005, and the movie studio was sold to Paramount Pictures/Viacom the same year. The label was shut down and absorbed by Geffen/Interscope/Universal shortly afterward, and the studio became a small subdivision of Paramount. The DreamWorks Records logo was the last completed project of the artist Roy Lichtenstein. Labelcode: LC 07266 / LC 7266
