Vajas

Vajas is a Norwegian electronic ensemble that fuses traditional Sámi vocal traditions with contemporary electronic production. The group features Kristin Mellem on violin and vocals, Nils Johansen on guitars, synthesizers, and computers, and renowned yoiker Ánde Somby on vocals. Their sound represents a distinctive bridge between indigenous Nordic music and modern electronic music, creating an innovative approach to world-electronic fusion.

The band debuted in 2003 and released their landmark album *Sacred Stone* in 2006, which garnered international attention and touring opportunities. Vajas’s work showcases how traditional yoik—the distinctive vocal expression of Sámi culture—can be seamlessly integrated with synthesizers and electronic textures, establishing them as pioneers in the intersection of ethnic and electronic music.
