About

Roy is a prolific US-based drum and bass and breakbeat producer who has shaped the genre since the early 1990s. The landmark 1995 single “Mutant Jazz” and critically acclaimed album “Self Evident Truth Of An Intuitive Mind” established Roy as a foundational figure in drum and bass. The project’s innovative approach to the genre became essential reference points for producers and DJs navigating the evolving landscape of fast-break electronic music.

Beyond solo work, Roy has collaborated extensively across the drum and bass spectrum. As part of Chocolate Weasel with Cris Stevens, the project explored funk and hip-hop influences through releases like “Music for Body Lockers” and the album “Spaghettification.” Most notably, Roy’s partnership with Shy FX produced the 2001 breakthrough “Shake Ur Body” featuring vocalist Di—a UK Top 7 hit on Positiva that brought drum and bass into mainstream consciousness. The duo continued this momentum with the 2002 album “Set It Off” on F.F.R.R. and later “Diary of a Digital Sound Boy” (2005) on Shy FX’s Digital Soundboy Recordings, featuring standout tracks like “Feelings” and “Plastic Soul.”

Roy’s sonic evolution has been marked by genre experimentation. The 2009 shift toward electro and techno under the moniker Mr. Sofalumpkins showcased live Ableton performances and original production, while subsequent releases—including 2013’s “That Jungle Vibe” and 2014’s “The Lazy Nine” on his own Adastra Recordings label—demonstrate Roy’s continued innovation and influence across electronic music.
